About us

In our mid thirties, John and I left our advertising and TV careers to sail around the world. We made it half way twice.
We lived on aboard for eight years, during which our sons came along. We returned to the UK for their births. Both boys started life aboard at 8 months. So, I get living in small spaces with small people. I had to adapt and become good at entertaining and teaching the boys. We quasi-quoted Dickens saying it was, ‘The best of times, and the worst of times’, because we were with them 24/7, and we were with them 24/7.
When we were living on the boat where ever we went we found playgrounds. It was fun for the children and a way to make friends with the locals, and often holiday makers. At one point I was going to write a blog about the playgrounds of the Balearics.
The Caribbean is not big on playgrounds, but we changed focus to dinghy rides, exploring the islands and beaches. From Puerto Rico through the Bahamas it is an improving play ground forecast. USA East Coast from Miami to New York, of course has great playgrounds and the children’s museums are excellent.
Time with our sons was precious. When we returned from our travels most people were intrigued and a little envious of our time in the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Bahamas and USA. However, some parents particularly those with high maintenance careers, said they were envious of the “time” which we had spent with our children.
My book commissioned by Wiley Nautical and now published by Fernhurst books, is an aspirational read, a how to guide if you would like to follow in our wake. ’Sail Away How to Escape the Rat Race and Live the Dream.”
