Helen Skelton (of Blue Peter and Strictly Come Dancing, Countryfile, amongst others) talked about challenges at the Hay Festival. “I think the thing with any sort of challenge is to take it bit by bit. I’m not a kayaker but I did those thousands of miles in the Amazon, but, in my head I only did sixty. I’m not a runner but I did eighty miles in one day but in my head I only ever ran five.”
When Helen took on her extraordinary high wire walk, (110 metres in the air) she, “Only did three steps, one, two, three breath, do it again.”
If you are having seconds thoughts at the scale of your ambition whilst planning your expedition in your snug home, take it two miles by two miles, or 30 minutes at a time. Faced with a long and complex journey across London, black cab drivers mentally ‘map’ their journey stage by stage.
