Breakfast

Our family breakfasts have changed over the years but here are few favourites:

Bagels with bacon

Bagels with peanut butter and jam (strawberry)

One son prefers chunky peanut butter, the other smooth. Both prefer strawberry jam.

Fish fingers with ketchup (sometimes in a sandwich)

I think fish fingers grilled are best. However my boys prefer fried and John prefers microwaved in bread.

Pancakes and bacon. (My Canadian cousins insist on Maple syrup too.) I often use butter to fry the pancakes giving extra flavour. Sometimes I use butter-milk instead of milk.

Bacon and poached/fried/scramble egg.

My mothers scrambled eggs were extra-ordinarily delicious because she added an extraordinary amount of butter. Yes butter (!) again.

Smoked salmon with scrambled egg and granary toast

Chorizo and fried egg

John’s family comes from Gibraltar. Fried eggs with chorizo was a Christmas treat. You can buy the Spanish sausage in small chunks or breadcrumbs which are tossed onto the eggs was they are frying. It makes for a spicy, treat.

Porridge with fruit and yoghurt

I cook porridge in a pan, although I have heard arguments for microwaving porridge.

I use frozen fruits such as raspberries or mixed fruits with yoghurt.

And bizarre seque or not, have a listen to ‘Taylor the Late Boy“- great song with my favourite ever line, “Never has love been so caffeine-anated’.

Silly lyrics to good tunes.

And long ago, because we were happy and sailing through Spain we used to sing, “Toastados” to Volare. That and other silly lyrics such as to, “I like to go  a yodel-ing” to  “I like to go a-yoghurt deep in the fridge recess. I like the sweet and gloopy ones, but strawberry is the best. Yogurting.. yogurting … yogurting, ting, ting ..”
